Shatush Hair Color (Hand Touch) in Federal Way, WA

The look of a summer spent outdoors, applied in an afternoon.

Shatush — often called the hand touch technique — is the quietest service on this menu and the hardest to spot as color work, which is exactly the point.

Sections are backcombed before the lightener is applied by hand, so only the strands that stand proud of the section take color. The result is a scattered, irregular lightness that looks like sun rather than salon.

Hand Touch shatush — soft, diffused blonde with no root line

The hand touch technique explained

Each section is teased at the base so that the shorter, interior strands fall away and only the longer surface strands remain exposed. Lightener is then touched onto those exposed strands by hand, with no foil and no fixed starting height.

Because the backcombing is irregular by nature, no two sections lighten identically. That irregularity is what produces the diffused, sun-bleached effect — and it is why shatush cannot be faked with evenly-placed foils.

It is the gentlest lightening service in the studio: less of the hair is exposed to lightener, and none of it at the scalp.

Shatush suits you if…

  • Clients who want to look lighter without looking colored
  • First-time color clients nervous about commitment
  • Anyone who wants the absolute minimum maintenance
  • Naturally light brown to dark blonde hair, where the effect reads most naturally

Probably not the right service if…

  • Clients who want a dramatic, obvious change
  • Very dark bases, where the contrast needed would defeat the subtlety
  • Anyone wanting gray coverage

How your Shatush appointment runs

  1. Sectioning and backcombing

The hair is divided into fine sections and each is teased at the base so only the surface strands stay exposed.

  2. Hand touch application

Lightener is touched onto the exposed strands with the fingertips and brush, deliberately irregular, with no fixed starting height.

  3. Open-air processing

Sections process in the open air, checked by eye, so the lift stays soft and diffused rather than sharply defined.

  4. Sheer toning

A sheer gloss unifies the tone without flattening the irregularity that makes the technique work.

  5. Detangle, treat and style

The backcombing is gently removed, a bond and moisture treatment applied, and the hair blown out.

How long it takes

About 2.5 to 3.5 hours — the shortest of the lightening services.

Keeping it beautiful

  • Refresh every 4–6 months, or simply when you feel like it
  • An occasional gloss if the tone drifts warm
  • Regular conditioning; the technique is gentle but the ends still carry lift
  • No root retouch required at any point

Shatush questions

Shatush FAQs

What does shatush mean?
Shatush is an Italian salon term for a backcombed, hand-applied lightening technique. It is often called the hand touch technique because the lightener is touched onto the exposed strands by hand rather than painted or foiled.
Is shatush the same as balayage?
They are cousins. Both are freehand and both avoid a root line. Shatush adds backcombing before application, which makes the result more scattered and subtle than a typical balayage.
Is shatush good for first-time color?
It is one of the best starting points. Less of the hair is lightened, nothing happens at the scalp, and if you decide color is not for you, it grows out without ever looking like a mistake.
Does the backcombing damage my hair?
It is done gently at the base of each section and combed out carefully at the end with conditioner. For most hair types it is well tolerated; very fine or fragile hair is assessed first.
How long does shatush last?
Four to six months, and often longer. There is no regrowth line to chase, so you come back when you want to rather than when the color demands it.
